The Mutual Benefits of Hiring Neurodivergent Employees: Research, Relationships, Reality

THIS SESSION WILL BE HELD VIRTUALLY VIA TEAMS

This presentation explores why hiring autistic and neurodivergent adults isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s a smart, research-backed strategy that strengthens organizations, communities, and the economy.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of what autism is, how it presents differently across individuals, and the common misconceptions that often create barriers to employment. The session highlights compelling research from sources such as Drexel University, the state of Pennsylvania, and Autism Speaks, illustrating current employment challenges as well as proven solutions, inclusive hiring models, and practical accommodation strategies.

Real-world stories bring the research to life, including the example of a Pennsylvania county employee whose successful employment created mutual benefits for both worker and employer. These stories show how neurodivergent hiring can improve productivity, innovation, workplace culture, and economic outcomes.

The webinar also addresses the realities employers face—such as stigma, systemic bias, and uncertainty around the hiring process—while providing space for questions and discussion. Attendees will learn about pending legislation, including the THINK DIFFERENTLY About Disability Employment Act, and how it may support businesses and neurodivergent entrepreneurs.

The session concludes with a call to action, encouraging organizations and HR professionals to help build inclusive workplaces that empower autistic individuals and drive meaningful, long-term impact.

    Learning Objectives
Following the presentation, participants will be able to:

    • Identify what autism is and understand the varying levels at which it manifests.

    • Recognize outdated stigmas and how they contribute to low employment rates for neurodivergent individuals despite strong skills and motivation.

    • Explain why companies should actively consider hiring autistic employees.

    • Identify the substantial benefits of neurodivergent hiring for individuals, businesses, and communities.

    • Demonstrate a basic understanding of neuroinclusive practices in the workplace.
