Federal and State Leave Laws and Recent Jury Verdicts
Involving Leave Disputes
In this session, we will provide you with an entertaining and educational update on recent developments under key leave laws, including the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), state unpaid leave laws, and the various State Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) laws.
Employers face what seems to be an endlessly expanding array of leave laws, both paid and unpaid. Our speaker will provide common sense guidance on the requirements of these various laws, including how they overlap. She will also review recent jury verdicts that illustrate the importance of compliance.
Speaker: Sarah Simmons, Counsel, Sun Life
Sarah Simmons is Absence and Employment Counsel at Sun Life, advising on legal issues related to the Sun Life’s Absence & Disability Management Solutions offered to employer clients, as well as employment and employee relations matters. Sarah’s legal career has focused on employment law. Prior to joining Sun Life, she was in-house employment counsel for a large Tier 1 automotive supplier and a specialty pharmacy company. She was also an attorney for Littler Mendelson, one of the largest labor and employment-focused law firms in the U.S., and a law clerk for the Honorable Marilyn Kelly at the Michigan Supreme Court. She has previously spoke on employment focused topics such as conducting internal investigations in the era of #MeToo and handling COVID accommodation requests at the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. She is a graduate of Michigan State University and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
